Alpha Lipoic Acid or thioctic acid is an organic naturally occurring organosulfur compound made inside the mitochondrion cells of the human body, where its main function is to help turn nutrients into energy.

It is found in all human cells and has powerful antioxidant properties which are linked to benefits including improvement of nerve function, slowed skin ageing, lowered blood sugar levels and other anti-inflammatory effects.

Products such as red and organ meat, broccoli, Brussel sprouts and spinach are good sources of Alpha Lipoic acid, however, as the body can only produce relatively small amounts, supplementation can help increase their levels.

Alpha-Lipoic acid supplementation at moderate doses of less than 600mg per day appears to have few serious side effects, and based on a growing body of clinical evidence, it shows promise as a dietary supplement to support a variety of measures related to healthy ageing.

It is one of the most potent, versatile and longer-acting antioxidant vitamins known to science, and the only major antioxidant vitamin only to possess the unique ability to work in both water-soluble and fat-soluble environments of the body. This means that ALA has the ability to access parts of cells that most other antioxidants are not able to reach. It neutralises the damaging free radicals which are thought to cause many age-related diseases like dementia, heart disease and diabetes. This ability to navigate the body's cellular membranes also means that ALA can cross the blood-brain barrier to exert neuroprotective effects, which may help stave off cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Our R form alpha-Lipoic acid is more potent and bioavailable than standard alpha Lipoic acid supplements.

How does Alpha Lipoic Acid work?

Scientists think that ALA helps lower blood sugar by processes that help to remove accumulated fat in muscle cells.

Benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid supplementation include-

  • Anti Ageing- ALA may help promote healthy ageing by repairing DNA damaged by oxidative stress (Source)

  • Metabolic health & weight loss- it was found in randomized, controlled trials that supplementation with alpha-lipoic resulted in a significant (1.27 kg) mean weight loss compared to placebos. Researchers concluded that ALA showed small, yet significant short-term weight loss. In diabetes, it helps to prevent beta cell destruction, may enhance glucose uptake, and its antioxidant properties may be helpful in slowing the development of diabetic complications such as diabetic neuropathy (Source)

  • Neuroprotection and memory disorders-   Studies have shown that ALA may be able to help reduce memory loss (Source) (Source) (Source)

  • Nerve Function- ALA May help to reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms of the most common kind of diabetic neuropathy.  (Source)

  • Anti Inflammatory- Alpha Lipoic acid may help to improve the prognosis of acute and chronic inflammatory disorders when used alone and/or in conjunction with other known anti-inflammatory agents. (Source)

  • Cardiovascular and metabolic health- Alpha Lipoic acid may be effective in helping slow the development of cardiovascular disorders. (Source)

Recommended Dosage

Recommended daily dose: 1 tablet twice daily with food

Always consult with your health care provider before starting to supplement with Alpha Lipoic acid.

Alpha-lipoic acid might interfere with blood sugar during and after surgery. Stop taking alpha-lipoic acid 2 weeks before elective surgical procedures.

Alcohol use can deplete thiamine (vitamin B1) in the body. Supplementing alpha-lipoic acid when there is a shortage of thiamine may cause serious health issues. Those taking alpha-lipoic acid should refrain from drinking alcohol or taking a thiamine supplement.

Taking alpha-lipoic acid may interact with diabetes medications and may cause your blood sugar to decrease. More evidence is needed to know if this interaction is a major concern but blood sugar levels should be monitored closely when supplementing with ALA.

Supplements like Alpha-lipoic acid may interact with medication and may not be suitable for people with certain health conditions. Talk with your doctor before incorporating them into your diet.
